Mt. Lemmon, Giant Cookies, & Pizza

My marathon is less than three weeks away and I’ve been consistently running 40-50 mile weeks.  My coach told me “I’m not a triathlete for the next few months but strictly a runner.”  I’ve been trying to maintain fitness on the bike and swim, mostly going to the Durapulse spin and Phoenix Swim Club Master classes.  I’ve been cycling 2x, swimming 1-2x, and running 5-6x a week.

Durapulse hosts monthly triathlon clinics and the August clinic took place at  Tucson’s Mt. Lemmon.  I couldn’t pass it up.  We had a clinic in Tucson last year and I love the riding down there.

My teammate and I drove down Friday afternoon from Tempe.  We met up with other people from our team and had drinks and dinner at Loews Hotel.  That place is AWESOME!

We began our ride at 7am the next morning.  While I was busy listening to music, coach Nick was giving directions.  Having been on this ride last year, I didn’t feel the need to listen very closely.  BIG MISTAKE.

The Mt. Lemmon climb is a little over 6,000 feet of climbing in 26 miles.

I got to the top, including the climb past Sumerhaven, in a little over 2 hours.  Coach Nick, Stephen, Joe and John had just gotten to the the top and were refilling their bottles and using the restrooms.   I used the restroom and when I got out, they were gone. I wanted to hang with the big boys, so I quickly jumped on my bike and made the fast descent down the mountain. I smiled and waived to all my teammates who were still climbing. I must have looked like an idiot…

Apparently, Nick told the team we were all eating cookies and pizza at the top. I had no clue. Instead, I was listening to stupid Nicki Minaj and Ke$ha at the base not listening to directions.

Here is the team having a jolly good time at the top of Mt Lemmon:

Everyone but me 😦

Pizza eating contest…

..and the giant cookie.

… and this is me after waiting nearly 2 hours at the base for everyone:

WAHHHHHHH!

One of the reasons why I wanted to climb Mt. Lemmon again was to get one of these cookies…

Linsey Corbin and her giant cookie at the summit of Mt. Lemmon

However, I apparently suck at following directions so I missed out on all the fun.  The infamous giant Mt. Lemmon cookie may have to wait till next year 😦

[…] This year, I was really looking forward to the enormous cookie at the top the mountain. Last year, I missed out on all the fun. […]
