This past weekend I hosted a Peak Tri Coaching / ONE Multisport training camp in Flagstaff. It gave us the opportunity to escape the 120-degree heat wave in Phoenix and train in slightly cooler weather at elevation. The camp was full of laughter, pedicures, pickle juice drinking contests, pizza eating, delicious desserts, David Tindall beatdowns, lengthy sessions in the Normatecs, and LOTS and LOTS of training.
Our shenanigans consisted of:
- 90 minute aerobic ride with Jeffrey on Lake Mary road
- 120 mile ride, 7K+ feet of climbing – from Lake Mary, up 89 and around the Wupatki/Sunset Crater loop, then the Snow Bowl climb for more torture.
- 4 mile run off the bike
- 1500m OWS in Lake Mary
*Day 2 highlights:
First and foremost, thank you John, Cyndi, and Jen for providing SAG. This was a tough, hilly, and hot ride, but it was way more fun with good company. John, Michael, Dave, Elliott, Cam, Jeffrey, Kimberly, Luis, Elissa, Chris, Lindsay, Jen, Sue, and Michelle… you all did amazing!
Lindsay ready to go HAM:
Elite Dave sucking my wheel:
Some of the group after the long climb up to Sunset Crater:
We were lucky enough to have the Whitesides’ girls in attendance to cook us brownies, cookies, and other amazing desserts after a long day of training. Thanks girls!
Meanwhile, Luis was busy watching soccer games in a foreign language.
I bonked bad on day one. I had no time to take off my wetsuit to chow down on some cold spaghetti on a paper towel.
- Mountain Man 70.3 bike course (56 miles)
- ROTB up that damn hill
- Long swim in Lake Mary
*Day 3 highlights:
Top performance of the trip goes to Jeffrey Gill. He has been fighting an ankle injury and missed out on the majority of the biking and running. Instead, he swam 10K in Lake Mary in just over three hours! Great job Spartan!
I got a pedicure by Emily as we waited for Jeffrey. The cold, Lake Mary (and probably leech-infested) mud felt really good on the feet.
John and Cyndi got owned by Monopoly and card games by the Whitesides’ girls:
That night, our group went out to dinner at The McMillan for some delicious food and drinks:
I got ditched and some of the group went out to eat the best food in the world… froyo.
- 20 mile run on Lake Mary road
- Day 4 highlight – I dropped Dave.
All in all, we put in over 200 miles of riding, ~30 miles of running, and lots of open water swimming. Everyone showed up with great attitudes and worked very hard. I thank you all for making this trip a ton of fun and a huge success.
I hung out with the Whitesides family after checking out of the house. We were in no rush to get back to the scorching heat so we went on a short hike at Snow Bowl. The ladies love me:
Then, we had a pizza eating contest to cap off a very fun and memorable weekend in Flagstaff.
Less than five weeks till Ironman Canada. Getcha popcorn ready folks, Ellie is gonna put on a show.
