Two Men and a Baby – SOMA 2011

Red Rock Company’s premiere event, SOMA triathlon, was supposed to the grand finale battle between “Father and Son.”  Dan had beat me at Marquee Triathlon and I won at Ironman Coeur d’Alene earlier in the year.  This was going to be Round 3… for all the marbles.

Running stride-for-stride at Marquee Triathlon

Unfortunately, I didn’t feel I could get ready in time since my marathon was just four weeks prior to SOMA.  I had done very little biking or swimming.  I’ve also been battling a minor injury so its been tough to train the past few weeks.  There will be plenty of races next year for the Father vs Son rematch.

I decided to do the relay.  DURAPULSE put on challenge to its relay participants that would award the fastest male and female teams.  I knew we’d have a good chance of winning with Sam Perry as our swimmer, and Joe Zitar on Dark Helmet. Our team name: Two Men and a Baby.

This was my first relay ever… and I had a great time. It’s weird showing up at 6AM and not running for another 4 hours. Many of my teammates were also doing relays so I had many of them to hang out with.  We sat on the corner of Mill/Rio Salado and watched the bike race for a couple hours.

9:30am – I went towards transition to start getting ready. It was getting hot quickly and I did my best to stay hydrated and cool.

Joe came in a little before 10am and I was off.

Holy stride length batman

I tried my best to keep a good pace but it was apparent I lost some run fitness since my marathon. We were 3rd overall off the bike.  I caught the two runners ahead of us, but then another relay runner caught me around mile 6.  I stuck with him for a mile but slowly dropped off.  My legs had nothing.  Stephen was there on his beach cruiser to film me…

I enjoyed myself the rest of the race. I saw several of my teammates on the run course, who I encouraged as it was starting to getting pretty hot out there.  I also got a chance to finally meet my friend, Dusty, out on the course. He was a large contributor to my Linsey Corbin cowboy hat.  Overall, I had a great time. I felt very little pressure and just enjoyed myself. It was fun spectating the swim and bike as I know a large part of the local triathlon community very well now.

Running down the home stretch.

Swim: 26:39 (Sam)

Bike: 2:29:47 (Joe)

Run time: 1:32:37 (Baby)

 2nd Overall.

Huge props to everyone out there today, and especially to those that raced the full. Temps were in the 90s on the run and the course doesn’t provide much shade.  There were a ton of my teammates racing… many of them used this as one of their last races before Ironman in a month.

Huge thanks to my teammates, Joe and Sam.  The two grumpy old men and a young, bright, fun-filled baby rocked it.
