First Bike Accident

I had my first serious  bike crash this past weekend…

I was house/dogsitting for a friend over the week and she owns tubulars.  She hadn’t rode them since Ironman Coeur d’Alene.  Before this past weekend, I knew very little about tubulars so I had no clue what to check for.  I pumped them up and they held air, so I thought everything fine.  Anyways, I was about halfway through my ride… I was going about 20-25mph around a turn, and all of sudden I could feel my rear wheel sliding out. It happened so fast.  I slid across the pavement (~15-20 feet) and ripped my bike jersey and shorts. The tubular on the wheel was completely off!! Luckily, I fell correctly (I think), because I didn’t catch my fall (my hands/wrists aren’t cut up too bad) and I didn’t hit my head.  I have some pretty bad road rash though and some bruising on my left side.  Luckily I was riding with my buddy Kevin, and Kerri (another teammate) was close by to pick me up.

Most of my bike is fine.  My handlebars were really bent (just ordered some new ones) and my rear derailer was broken.  Hopefully my friend’s wheel made it out okay.  It looked fine, but I took it to the LBS to have it inspected.

First time showering with new battle wounds …. someone please call:

I found out Axe Body Wash with the little mineral grains is not a good idea for road rash… at least I smelled good.

A no-no for road rash

I went through my friend’s cabinets and found various items to patch me up: tagaderm, bacitracin ointment, gauze, and lots of bandages. My butt has the worse road rash. Everything is healing nicely though.

Thankfully I made it out okay… it could’ve been a lot worse. Huge thanks to Kerri for going out of her way to pick me up… This weekend I’m swimming in Tempe Town Lake (swim race) and a Firebird Lake in Chandler (Amica Tri). I hope it doesn’t get infected!

I figured the acids in the water would burn off all the remaining germs on my road rash
